Common Artefacts: EASA (European Architecture Students Assembly

Wed 23 Aug - Sat 3 Sep

12 - 6pm

Common Artefacts is a showcase of some of the works created during EASA Commons, a European architecture event that saw 450 international young designers come to Sheffield to work on 28 parallel projects in the city.

Exhibited is a selection of objects made over 2 weeks this summer, although many of the projects happened in situ in independently-run spaces such as Bloc Projects, Abbeyfield Park, Green City Action, Heeley City Farm, Mondo Radio and Gut Level. Each workshop group aims to apply contemporary discourse around access to land and sharing resources to real-world projects, many of which were developed over 6 months with people in Sheffield.

The work in the gallery includes:

The Gift, led by Julia Spirig and Pablo Fillit, a large tapestry that maps land ownership in Sheffield and aims to reveal the marginal spaces that DIY culture can operate within despite the scale of council-owned land in the city. The work will be offered to the city council as a gift after the exhibition closes.

A packhorse library of research created by Walking and Reading, led by Liam Healy. The coat’s many pockets are filled with writings and reflections of participants on the right to roam and access to nature. These were born from retracing the routes of historic trespasses and speaking to ramblers and local campaigners.

Four identical housing blocks by Dumb Emancipatory Housing, led by Sebastian Bietenhader and Matthias Moroder. The workshop aimed to find new ‘dumb’ forms for the architectural language of common housing, working day by day on clay models with participants.
