Becoming British is an exhibition, a gathering and a space for work centring immigrant narratives and experiences.

Curated by Lora Krasteva in collaboration with Aisha Seriki, Chris Cambell and Nik Nak, the programme consists of portraiture, erasure poetry, soundscapes and a live event with Q&A with the artists.

Throughout the exhibition there will be a radio broadcast streaming the activity in the space, and a series of interviews around the theme of Becoming British. You are welcome to contribute to the broadcast or tune in from anywhere in the world.

Lora Krasteva is a Bulgarian artist based in Sheffield. Her lived experience of migration in 6 different countries and her recent insights from applying for British citizenship, is what led her to this project. She is part of Global Voices Theatre, a theatre company dedicated to introducing international theatre by long-term excluded creatives in the UK.

Aisha Seriki is a Nigerian, London-based creative specialising in portrait/fashion photography. Currently based in South London, her family emigrated from South East Asia to the UK. Aisha’s photography addresses blackness, gender, migration, class and the myriad points of intersection within all four.

Chris Cambell (He/They) is a mixed-race Native American with ADHD living as an immigrant in the UK. He is an award winning poet, storyteller, and graphic designer. He is the Co-Founder of Fight Evil With Poetry Press and loves speaking about culture, creativity, and the joy of failure. He is a repeat slam champion and runs weekly online workshops.

NikNak is an award-winning artist from London and based in Leeds, UK. As a dynamic music creative with experimental albums and tracks/remixes on Come Play With Me, Kynant Records, OTONO, Reel Long Overdub under her belt, NikNak regularly redefines and expands upon her role as a ground-breaking multidisciplinary artist.

She was the first Black Turntablist to win the Oram Award in 2020 and is listed as one of DJ-Mag’s ‘Ones To Watch in 2022’. NikNak has played at Wilderness, We Out Here, Leeds International Festival, Bestival and more. She is also a member of TC And The Groove Family, a bold UK-based 10-piece collective that explores intercultural grooves and genres.
