Bloc Projects Public Programme

In eighteenth century Paris, the formalised gathering of cultural elites at intimate salons witnessed the radical exchange of often politicised economic, social, philosophical and cultural ideas.

These gatherings created an arena where thoughts could be debated catalysing an era of Enlightenment. ‘Salon’ adopts an approach to public programming which borrows from the legacy of European Salons as well as the historically multidisciplinary and inclusive legacy of free, alternative arts education.

Salon hosts dynamic workshops, talks and events profiling innovative artists, thinkers and cultural practitioners. With the professional development of Sheffield based artists at its core, the Salon is shaped both by emerging national discourse as well as the needs/interests and suggestions of local creative practitioners.

Previously Salon has formed part of Making Ways, a new programme supported by Sheffield Culture Consortium through Arts Council England to showcase, celebrate and develop the exceptional contemporary visual art produced in the city.
