An independent project put together by a group of artists who form a critical discussion group based at Bloc Studios, in which each artist has responded to notions of stillness and its presence in their work. Containing new work by Sean Williams (shortlisted for the John Ruskin Prize 2014), Rita Kaisen, Richard Stott, Helen Stokes, Janie Moore, Iris Harris, and Andy Cropper, Stillness features work created in a variety of media including painting, photography and installation.
The seven artists involved in the exhibition Stillness are part of an informal critical discussion group that has met regularly in previous years to share work and discuss ideas. Based at Bloc Studios in central Sheffield, the group is a platform for artists to exchange inspiration, influence and methodology. The idea for a themed group exhibition came in part from a feeling that a self-led show, born out of a supportive discussion group, could generate a conceptually coherent and rich body of work. The concept of stillness was present as an attribute in a number of the artists’ work, and provided a fertile conceptual starting point.
Stillness is funded by Arts Council England. A publication to accompany the show will be launched at the private view and will be available free of charge during the exhibition.
