For this event artist Alexis Hudgins will be performing a durational reading of her novella Keep the Event Open.

Keep the Event Open is an autobiographical novella that documents the interior and exterior experience of becoming a mother. Architectural details mix with memory, events, theory and criticism to look inwards into the life of a woman building a family alongside the renovation of an architecturally designed artist studio, while simultaneously peering outwards into the neighborhood and world that surrounds her. Description of both real and imagined spaces allow for an examination of how creativity, violence and transformation occur as an extension of design and bodies, turning over how these experiences can be processed, examined and re-communicated.

The audio of the performance will be recorded for anyone who is unable to attend the full reading.

Alexis Hudgins is a Los Angeles based artist whose practice co-opts methods used in the production of reality TV to generate new forms through installation, video and performance. Using her experience as a producer for reality television and artist Paul McCarthy, her work explores the similarities and ruptures between the experienced and the produced; less as a critique of media culture than an expression of it. Hudgins is a doctoral student in Art Theory, Criticism and Practice at UCSD and holds an MFA in Photography from the University of California, Los Angeles, a BA in Art History from Emory University, and a BFA in Photography from the California Institute of the Arts.
