The Painting School 1 (New Materialities) is the second of two short independently curated exhibitions presented this September as part of our Adjunct Programme. The Bloc Projects Adjunct Programme supports cross-diciplinary partnerships and self-directed artist or curator led projects, including those by members.

Gary Simmonds and Dale Holmes are engaged in an ongoing dialogue through painting. This dialogue takes the form of conversation, the sharing of knowledge – practical, technical, theoretical, pedagogical – and the making of paintings. The exhibition Painting School 1 (New Materialities) is the first in an ongoing series of exhibitions, symposia, events and publications, which are moments to reflect upon and perform this process of dialogue and its development.

Alongside new paintings made over the summer and during the install of the show, for The Painting School 1 (New Materialities) Holmes and Simmonds have brought together new work form Paul Barlow, Chris Shaw, Lizzie Taylor-Hall and Megan Bonser in order to examine notions of exuberance, provisionality and process in relation to surface, colour and materiality.

Gary Simmonds is an artist based in Sheffield and a senior lecturer in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University. His practice is concerned with abstract painting’s relationship to geometry, design and ornamentation. He makes paintings that flirt with: formal abstraction, beauty, decoration and disorder. He has exhibited work both nationally and internationally including solo shows at One in the Other, London, and De March and Solbiati, Milan. His group shows include Nothing is Forever, South London Gallery; Die Panke, LoBe projects, Berlin.

Dr Dale Holmes is Lecturer in Contemporary Art and Illustration at Huddersfield University, working primarily with painting, collectives, staging and temporary architecture. He has exhibited recently at ArtLacuna, London; Bloc Projects, Sheffield; Essays and Observations, Berlin; SIA Gallery, Sheffield; Galerie Ton van Breugel, Amsterdam. His work was included in John Moores painting prize 23 and 24. He is a founding member, with Kirsten Cooke, of the artist collective Material Conjectures and of Totaller with Lesley Guy and Lea Torp Nielsen. Material Conjectures are currently engaged in a residency at Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall.

The Painting School 1 (New Materialities) is supported by Sheffield Hallam University.
